Church projects haven’t been easy in the last few years. Heading into 2025, construction costs were already projected to jump by 3-5%. And that was before tariffs and labor factored into the equation. Expect 2026 to have similar strains and unexpected costs.
As you prepare your budget and planning team, here are a few things to keep in mind for the 2026 season ahead.
Planning for 2026 Church Projects, Renovations, and Related Expenses
It’s safe to expect costs to escalate in 2026, even from the highs they reached in 2025. The key as a pastor or church leader is to see the big picture behind those costs. We’ve seen recent estimates for church building construction running between $200 and $500 per square foot. (Variations come from size, design, and amenities.)
It’s a big range — and that’s for a new build. A renovation is harder to estimate. It’s easy for 20-30% of your overall total expense to come from “invisible” areas, like architecture fees, engineering, and city permits. You might need to invest in an acoustics consultation and plan for audio-visual integration. What about the costs of staging and deconstructing a temporary place of worship, classrooms, or a similar ministry area while the project is underway?
You also need to be ready for things like unexpected electrical repairs or HVAC upgrades. What if you discover lead or asbestos when you start a renovation? ADA compliance is a factor, as are new code-mandated requirements that might not have been in place when the building was built.
It’s tempting to think of the construction bid as the final price. That is rarely the case. As we head into an uncertain year, you want accurate estimates that you can review with a qualified partner, like Ministry Solutions. Then leave plenty of breathing room in your final budget to adjust as you go along.
Renovation Strategies That Protect Ministry Operations
If you’re considering a church renovation, it’s essential that you build out a clear and informed strategy before you break ground. Your strategy should consider things like:
- Minimizing worship disruption: How can you maintain normal operations while your renovation is in progress?
- Volunteer burnout and congregation fatigue: If your renovation requires a long timeline, high costs, or increased volunteer hours, make sure to consider how to maintain morale as you go along.
- Phases: Don’t bite off more than you can chew at once. Consider breaking a larger renovation into phases based on ministry priorities.
Another factor to consider is how you can offset costs, both in the short and the long term. Starting with the latter, look for ways you can incorporate energy efficiency and sustainability savings in your new space. Lighting alone can count for 20% of your total electricity consumption. Even if you aren’t redoing the wiring, consider LED retrofit kits while you have contractors in the building. Upgrade windows and insulation, too. Increase climate control with HVAC zoning and smart thermostats. Any time you can find a way to generate savings over time, take it.
The other opportunity that a renovation presents is to set the stage for activating your church building spaces. This taps into your building's potential as a space for weekday activities that generate revenue to offset ongoing maintenance and renovation costs. There are a lot of ways to do this, from adding a cafe or pickleball court to working with a qualified partner to set up a childcare program.
Use the renovation planning process to consider how you might use your new spaces in ways that ease the financial burden of your church real estate and impact your community at the same time. Then consider if you need to do anything specific while building to accommodate that additional use.
Financing, Fundraising, and Congregational Buy-In
The last thing we’ll touch on here is considering how you’ll fund your ministry renovation project. We’re not going to dive into the specifics of large-scale fundraising here. But as you consider things like capital campaigns, designated giving arrangements, and structured pledge cycles, make sure you have strong estimates and plenty of wiggle room for the potential of scope creep and unexpected rises in costs.
It’s important to go to your funders with numbers that are as accurate as possible, right from the start. Don’t be overly transactional, too. Make sure you’re consistently aligning your ask with your ministry vision to make sure everyone understands what you’re accomplishing.
Prepping Renovation Projects for 2026
If you have a large-scale renovation in motion for next year, it’s important that you do your research and plan wisely, knowing the year ahead is anything but predictable. It’s also important to build partnerships that can help you as you go along.
